Thiel Lauds Play

Stickmen To Scrimmage Bowie

Special To The Cavalier Daily

Virginia's defending national
champion lacrosse team entertains
the Bowie Lacrosse Club Sunday
afternoon March 7, at 2 p.m. in a
game scrimmage on lower Lambeth
field, Head coach Glenn Thiel
hopes to use the scrimmage as a
final tuneup for the season opener
against powerful Mt. Washington
Club March 13 in Baltimore.

This past Sunday the team held
an intra squad scrimmage, and Thiel
said, "The scrimmage showed us a
lot about our personnel under game
conditions, and the results were
good."

Returning second team
All-American attackman Tom
Duquette led all scorers with 5
goals and one assist for the Blue
team (which lost 9-8). Attackman
Jay Connor contributed two assists
to the Blue cause, and freshman
middle Doug Cooper scored once
and assisted twice.

Soph attackman Rick Bergland
had 3 goals and 2 assists to pace the
White team, while junior crease
attackman Doug Tarring also tossed
in three goals. The White defense of
Bruce Mangels, Tom Dawes, and
Tom Schildwachter, along with
goalie Al Hirsh (who have 15 saves)
helped keep the more potent Blue
offense in check.

The scrimmage contributed to
splitting the team into an A and a B
squad. Some former lettermen did
not survive the cut, and five
freshmen made the varsity, with
Cooper being the only likely starter
of the five.

Thiel expects to use the Bowie
scrimmage to firm up th midfield
units, the most apparent weakness
of the team, especially against a
midfield-deep Mt. Washington Club.

"Bowie has a fine club with
some outstanding individuals, and
we expect them to give us plenty of
competition," Thiel commented.
