Wrestlers Beat N.C. State For 2nd ACC Win

By Randy Wert
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

Again relying on strength in the
lower weight classes, the Cavalier
wrestling squad ran up an early
17-0 lead in Memorial Gym
Saturday, and coasted to their
second straight ACC win, with a
23-9 decision over N.C. State.

The Cavaliers won the first five
matches, and finished with two
straight wins to overpower the
Wolfpack.

Shelley Zablow's return to the
mat was an overwhelming success,
as he trounced State's George Harry
13-3 in the 150-pound class.
Another newcomer, Bill Farrell,
wrestling his second match of the
season picked up his first win with
a 5-4 decision in the Heavyweight
fight, beating 285-pound Howard
Abbey with a takedown in the last
ten seconds.

Four Stay Unbeaten

Lou Pavia, John Pitas, and Jack
Johndrow, Kevin Michaels and
John Pegues maintained their
undefeated logs in Atlantic Coast
Conference competition with Pavia
picking up the only fall of the
afternoon, flattening Charlie
Williams with nine seconds elapsed
in the final period. Pitas was
victorious by 13 points and
Johndrow by six, but Pegues and
Michaels escaped with narrower
wins.

Sun-drenched Memorial Gym
accommodated several hundred
people for the match which saw
new combinations by Coach George
Edwards fail to alleviate the dearth
of consistency in the upper middle
weights. Denis Bittenbender went
down 13-5 while another newcomer
to the Varsity scene, Greg Lilly,
also lost. Ted Moore, wrestling at
177, found an aggravating injury
hampering and dropped a 7-3
decision.

"Outstanding Performances"

Coach Edwards indicated after
the match that "our outstanding
performances came in the first five
weights and these will have to be
the team's strength for the ACC
tournament, plus Kevin Michaels at
190. Moore, Farrell, and
Bittenbender will have to co
through and get into the finals to
get those big points."

Commenting upon the recent
debuts of Farrell and Zablow,
Edwards said, "The most important
thing now is to get into top notch
shape for the tournament. Their
moves are coming back and the key
thing is their condition."

Teamwise, the Cavaliers are now
2-1 in the league, and 7-5 overall,
including an impressive 4-1 log
since the semester break, losing
only to Indiana of the powerful Big
Ten.

Outstanding records among the
Cavalier first-stringers include
those of 142-pounder Pegues who is
10-0-2, Michaels, 11-1 at 190, Pitas,
9-1 in the 126 pound class, Pavia,
11-2-1 at 134, and 118-pounder
Johndrow, 7-0 in dual meets.

Edwards and his charges have all
week to prep for Duke which
comes to Charlottesville Saturday
for a match which should feature
several interesting pairings.
