Terps, USC Could
Snarl 'Heel Plans

By John Markon

The long ACC basketball
season, now in its dying weeks,
could be decided this week as
North Carolina's red-hot Tar
Heels, now with a magic
number of three play two key
road contests with Maryland
and South Carolina.

By winning the two games
the 'Heels could clinch a tie
for the conference crown and,
with some help, could also put
the other contenders, Virginia
and N.C. State, to sleep. A win over
South Carolina in Saturday's
television game would also doom
the Gamecocks, the only other
serious contender, to at best a
second place finish.

Maryland will test UNC tonight
in a Cole Field House encounter
that ranks as a "must" game for the
tumbling Terrapins. Fast starters
this year, the Terps' record has
fallen to a 4-6 in the league as their
performances of late haven't been
meeting expectations. Most experts
see a replay of the teams' first
encounter, however, where UNC's
good defense and outside shooting
allowed them to run away from
Lefty Driesell's but less agile squad.

The interesting thing about this
week's schedule is that it has all the
contenders except South Carolina
playing away from home where, as
Virginians know, victories don't
come easily. North Carolina may be
too far ahead to catch but the
Gamecocks' accommodating schedule
might give them the edge in the
tight battle for the runner-up spot
and second seeding in the
tournament, now only three weeks
away.
