Virginia's Lanny Stahurski Battles Tom McMillen In Last Night's U Hall Action

Battle Of Freshman Titans Was Relatively Even But Cavayearlings Fell To Terps, 85-72

Maryland's Baby Terps won last
night's game with Virginia's
Cavayearlings as expected, 85-72,
but not before there thunder was
stolen by some crowd-pleasing
performances by Virginia center
Lanny Stahurski and Cava
yearlings' Coach Dick DiBiaso.

Winners of eleven straight
contests and outscoring their opposition
by 35 points per game, the
Baby Terps and their star center
Tom McMillen ran into their
toughest opposition of the year.
The game was relatively close
throughout and much of
Maryland's final margin came when
with 17 seconds remaining, Coach
DiBiaso chipped in with a four
technical foul ejection that sent
McMillen to the foul line and the
statisticians to their record books.

Coach DiBo's protest involved at
time out that he was not permitted
by the official to call. This led to a
confrontation of epic proportions
which had Coach DiBiaso looking
into the officials eyes and
reportedly daring him to "Call
another one."

After a ten-footer by Stahurski
tied the score at 22-22 Maryland
began their slow process of pulling
away. However, it seemed that
every time the Terps looked ready
to blow it open the Cavayearlings
would rally, often on the outside
shots of Stahurski who fired from
all over and totalled 19 points.

Virginia's task was made difficult
by a serious ankle injury to Bob
McKeag which ended one of Bob's
better games at the half and a thigh
injury to guard Al Drummond. The
Cav's 55 per cent shooting kept
them close in the second half but
cold spells and break-away layups
allowed Maryland to build a lead.
Bob McCurdy, top Virginia scorer
this year, fouled out and was held
to 10 points by McMillen, who was
on him much of the time.

McMillen scored 25 points, 13
from the foul line, and played well
although his rumored resemblance
to Lew Alcindor wasn't readily
appearance. Cornered after the game,
he remarked that "He (Stahurski)
played me real tough," and
admitted that Lanny's good defense
kept him from doing his usual
amount of ball-handling.

The amount of improvement on
this team since their first game has
been considerable. Stahurski, once
the object of the fan's humor, is
now being boomed by some as a
sophomore starter. Fans of his and
Coach DiBiaso's should be advised
that the next frosh action will be
February 20 at Duke. The rematch
with Tom and the Terps is March 6
at College Park.
