Returning to the court loaded
for bear after a lackluster halftime,
as is their wont, Virginia's
Cavayearlings put together a
strong second period and overcame
Washington & Lee's spirited but
outclassed freshmen, 102-82.

Bob McCurdy led the Virginia
forces with 30 points and thirteen
rebounds while Al Drummond
combined his 19 tallies with
impressive floor play. Other
Cavayearling stickouts were Bob
McKeag, with 21 points, and little
Steve Morris, with 8 assists. All
Virginia shooters did exceptionally
well, hitting on more than sixty-five
percent of their shots.

At the contest's outset it seemed
that Virginia would blow the Little
Generals over without any undue
difficulty. However, a 20-10
Virginia advantage was turned into
a 35-34 W&L lead when the
Lexingtonians were able to parlay
some excellent long shooting with
some friendly officiating. The game
was nip and tuck for the rest of the
half, with the halftime score being
50-49 in Virginia's favor.

A quick basket by Lanny
Stahurski, author of a five-for-five
shooting night, triggered a ten point
Cavayearling streak and put the
game away. The story for the rest
of the evening was primarily that of
Virginia's shooters staying hot
while W&L's marksmen wilted
under considerable Cavayearling
pressure.

Reserve Paul Gabriel sunk point
number 100 with 1:17 to play on a
follow up layin. The Cavayearlings,
now 7-3 on the season, can next be
seen Saturday at U Hall against
Hampden-Sydney in a 4 PM game.

Cavayearling Coach Dick
DiBiaso, a smug winner recently,
reintroduced himself to the ACC
corps of officials by drawing a
double technical foul. The call
against DiBiaso, one of all too
many in an over-officiated contest,
came after the Coach claimed a
W&L player was positioned illegally
during a free throw attempt.
