Hoot Brought The Team "Back To Normalcy" For The Navy Game
"It was no fluke, Virginia played
well," commented Duke Coach
Bucky Waters of the Cavaliers' 75
70 upset of his thirteenth ranked
Blue Devils. But not well enough to
please the Nation's sportswriters
who vote for the top 20.
In the AP poll released
yesterday 38 teams received votes,
among them South Carolina, North
Carolina, Duke and N.C. State.
Where was Virginia? "We need to
beat them 23 times down there,"
expostulated SID Barney Cooke,
"before they'll rank us, That's a tall
order, but Bill Gibson's ballers
should at least get votes if they do
well this weekend against Army,
ranked 14th, or West Virginia, a six
point loser to Kentucky Monday
night in Morgantown.
Face Navy Today
But first Virginia must get by
Navy in Annapolis today at 4:00
P.M. "They use the shuffle offense,
a very deliberate style," said
assistant Coach Chip Conner who
scouted the Middies, "They try to
consume as much time as possible
to take the perfect shot. Their
defense is typical of the academies,
extremely aggressive due to a lack
of height."
Four Starters Back
Four starters and three
lettermen return from last year's
squad which finished with a dismal
4-19 ledger, including the leading
rebounder and scorer. Jack Conrad
is Navy's big gun. A 6-0 guard,
Conrad has averaged 19.3 thus far
this years,..I below his average last
year.
Small Front Three
The Midshipmen only trailed
eighth ranked Penn by six at
halftime and were only trailing by
nine with three minutes left when
the Quakers took advantage of the
desperate Middies and spread their
lead to a final 15, 59-45. Navy
started a front line of 6-3, 6-4, 6-5
to combat the Quaker line of 6-8, 68,
6-6 in that game.
Gerry Paces Virginia
Coach Gibson will go with his
starting five of captain Bill Gerry
(16 pts. 9 reb), Scott McCandlish
(16.7, 10), Frank Dewitt, Tim Rash
(11-22 from the floor, 8.7 average),
and Barry Parkhill. Top reserves
will be sophomore Jim Hobgood
(7.0 avg) and the amazin' Chip
Miller (11-14 from the floor, 8.0
average.
