Swimmers Top WVU
In Opening Upset

By Jim Wilson
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

Despite the absence of three key
swimmers, an arduous eight-hour
bus trip, a horrendous pool and an
underdog rating, the
Cavalier swimming team defeated
a potentially strong West Virginia
team at Morgantown last weekend
59-54. It was a victory more of
coaching theory than of individual
team members.

The West Virginia team has been
doing sprint workouts whereas the
Wahoos have been doing extensive
distance practices. This difference
manifested itself in the meet
especially in 200 yard and over
length races and influenced even
some of the sprints. In the 200 and
over yard races the Wahoos had a
46-17 point advantage over the
Mountaineers. Virginia swept the
200 yard free, 200 yard fly, and the
200 yard backstroke. They also
came in first and third in the 1000
yard free. 200 yard I.M., and the
500 yard free.

Mark Bernardino was the big
winner of the day as he won three
races and set a pool record in the
1000 yard free style in a fine
time of 10:51.3. The other winners
of the day were Gary Chewning
and Jack Curtis in the 200 and
100 yard freestyles respectively.
Jerry Rollins and John Vinson were
also victorious. They won the
backstroke and I.M. respectively
