W&M, H-SC Get Bowl Bids

By Bill Nachman
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

Rallying in the closing minutes
of the second half, the Indians from
William and Mary pulled out a win
over the University of Richmond
Saturday and also latched on to a
bid to the post-season Tangerine
Bowl.

Saturday's win was a hard
earned effort for Lou Holtz and his
charges from the Williamsburg reservation.

With less than a minute
remaining, W&M trailed the Spiders
by five points and had 80 yards to
reach the end zone. The payoff was
a 40-yard pitch from quarterback
Steve Regam to flanker David
Knight, who caught the ball and fell
into the end zone with only 12
seconds showing on the clock. The
Indians jubilantly left Richmond's
City Stadium with a slim 34-33
advantage.

Not only does Saturday's action
send the Indians winging down to
Orlando, Florida. December 28 for
the Tangerine Bowl, but the Regan-to-Knight
play sewed up the Southern
Conference championship for
W&M.

Holtz Mum

Coach Holtz and his staff are
remaining rather mum over the
entire issue of the Bowl bid. Since
Coach Holtz and the other varsity
staff members were on a scouting
trip at press time, freshman head
Don Pucci was contacted. "It looks
like we'll probably be flying down
the 21st to Orlando." Mr. Pucci
said, "and after the Bowl and the
28th, we tentatively will remain
until right before New Year's Eve."

Facing the spirited Indians will
be a hard-nosed unit from the
University of Toledo Early indications
have Toledo as a solid two
Touchdown favorite. This is understandable
when one matches
Toledo's Time 11-0 ledger (which
ranks them fifteenth in the nation)
against W&M's flimsy 5-6 mark,
including a 33-6 spanking against
our own "losers," the Virginia 'Grid
Machine.'

H-SC To Rockne Bowl

Hampden-Sydney bested
Randolph-Macon Saturday, 14-6, at
Death Valley (Farmville) and
earned the right to play in next
week's Knute Rockne Bowl at
Atlantic City (N.I.)'s Convention
Hall, often the scene of the less
beastly Miss America pageantry.

Hampden-Sydney carries the
nation's best small college defense
into the November 28 action along
with a smart 9-1 mark, pitted
against the Tigers are the Montclair
Indians from Upper Montclair. N.J.,
who currently sport a fine 8:1
record.
