Virginia Tangles With Maryland With Hopes Of Attaining Its Only ACC Win Of The Season
As the University sports
enthusiasts turn their sights to
the promising winter basketball
season, the ning football
fans can cheerfully turn their
sights to future days of glory in
Scott Stadium. In their
recently completed 4-1 season,
the Cavayearlings compiled
some impressive statistics
which substantiate their highly
touted potential.
Leading the offense, which
averaged 29 points and 417
yards per game, was Harrison
Davis with 900 yards passing and
rushing, Merritt with 552 yards
rushing and Bill Maxwell with 14
pat's and a perfect 5 for 5 field goal
records. With nearly fifty more
plays, the Cavayearlings had nearly
twice as many yards rushing and 50
more yards passing than the
opponent. Merritt's fine 6.7, Davis's
5.4, and Kelly Millard's 4.2 yards
gained rushing.
In the passing department things
were not so good. Davis's passes
averaged 15 yards per reception
which, however, were not all that
frequent, only 37.8%. He was also
intercepted fourteen times.
Defensively statistics are
difficult to understand for the
season for the stats compiled
emphasized the offense and its
leaders. As a unit, however, the
defense held their opponents to
only 2.8 yards per rush and only
3.9 yards per play as opposed to
Virginia's 4.7 and 5.2 respectively.
A respectable show.
