Cavalier Fullback Gary Helman Awaits Bill Troup's Touchdown Pass In Colgate Game

The Third-Year Running Back Turned In Another Fine Performance Saturday In 54-12 Romp

Consistency on offense was
credited by Cavalier head coach
George Blackburn for the Wahoo's
54-12 rout of outclassed Colgate
Saturday, as they recovered from
an early 12-0 deficit behind the
passing of Bill Troup and the
running of Gary Helman and
Jimmy Lacey, and went on to an
easy win.

The Cavaliers completely
dominated the contest after the
first quarter, as they scored a total
of 35 points in the second quarter
to put the game out of reach for
the Red Raiders, who threw a scare
into the small Openings crowd at
Scott Stadium by passing their way
to a 12-0 early lead, behind the
strong arm of quarterback Steve
Goepel.

Troup, Helman, and Lacey led
the way to 576 yards in total
offense for the Cavaliers, with help
from a number of reserves who saw
extensive second half action. Troup
threw 10 completions for 199
yards and four touchdowns, and
tied the Wahoo record for TD
passes in a game. Helman, with 120
yards, and Lacey, with 91, both
had their top yardage days of the
season.

Mr. Blackburn cited running
backs Dave Bratt and Greg
Dickerhoof, tight end Bill Davis,
and tackles Bill Farrelt and Bob
Berkeley for top performances
among the reserves. Dickerhoof, a
redshirted third year-man seeing
his first extensive action of the
season, gained 73 yards on 12
carries, and scored twice, on runs of
one and nineteen yards.

The Red Raiders found little
success offensively after the first
quarter, in which Goepel threw for
two touchdowns and moved the
ball with apparent case through the
air. Of his 200 yards passing, 172 of
them were in the first half. The
Wahoo defense swarmed Colgate
runners as the Raiders finished with
minus 39 yards on the ground.

The win gave the Wahoos a
perfect 5-0 record against
non-conference teams for the
season, and leaves them with one
more chance to keep from having
an unblemished 0-6 record in ACC
play, as they finish the season
against Maryland at Scott Stadium
Saturday.
