Wahoo Fullback Gary Helman Had An Outstanding Day In Saturday's Loss To N.C. State

Third Year-Man Blasted The Wolfpack Defense For 110 Yards And A Touchdown In 23 Carries

Cavalier performances were
generally poor in the 21-16 loss
to N.C. State in Raleigh
Saturday, but one Cavalier,
fullback Gary Helman, made
his best showing of the year
against the Wolfpack, and is
the Player of the Week.

Helman, who, along with
running mate Jim Lacey, has led
the Wahoo running attack all
season, rushed for 110 yards on 23
carries in the contest, caught three
passes for 33 yards, and scored a
touchdown on a 30-yard run.

Statistical Leader

The performance allowed
Helman to increase his team
leadership in rushing and scoring
statistics over Lacey, who gained 77
yards on 15 carries in the game.
Helman's season totals now show
546 yards on 128 carries for an
average of over 4.2 yards per carry.
He also leads the team in scoring
with 36 points on six touchdowns.
Five of his scores have come on
runs, and one on a pass.

Good First Half

Most of Helman's running
against State came in the first half
when he led the way to Virginia's
first two drives. On Virginia's first
offensive play he took a screen pass
15 yards, which was instrumental in
setting up Jim Carrington's 37-yard
field goal.

When the Wahoos got the ball
back minutes later at their own
four yard line, Helman ran up the
right sideline for 22 yards to start a
96-yard drive which ended in a
Cavalier touchdown.

In the unsuccessful comeback
try in the fourth quarter Helman
was instrumental, scoring the lone
touchdown, and catching a pass
which took the Cavaliers to the 19
yard line with 29 seconds left,
before an interception on the next
play killed the Wahoo hopes.

The 5-11, 196-pound Helman is
a junior from Youngwood, Pa.
