Virginia's Soccer Team Closed The Regular Season At 7-2-1

Second In ACC Assured And Hopes Run High For NCAA Bid

Last Saturday the Cavalier
booters ended their 1970
season with a 2-1 victory over
the Clemson Tigers on the
Tigers' home field, thus
clinching at least second place
in the ACC. If Clemson had
won they would be in second
place with an undefeated
record instead of a 2-1-1
ledger. With the second place
berth at stake and first place a
possibility, if Maryland loses,
the contest had special
significance for both teams.

With this victory Virginia
raised its season record to 3-1
in the ACC and 7-2-1 for the
season. With this record it is
very possible that the booters
have clinched the state title,
even though losing to
Randolph-Macon. The team is
now waiting to hear if they will
get an NCAA championship
bid.

Forecasting the continuing
strength of Cavalier Soccer for
years to come, Sam Crosby, a
second-year man, and Andy
DuPont, a first-year man,
scored one each in the game.
Previously Crosby, a right
halfback, scored twice in
Virginia's only loss to
Maryland while DuPont tallied
against Duke from his right
wing slot.

Coaches Richard Lewis and
Ian Falconer will have made
their last appearances as
Cavalier mentors if the squad
does not qualify for post
season play. Both gentlemen
will be leaving Virginia to
pursue interests in the outside
world.
