Forecasting fanatics fearlessly
frolic through the collegiate chart
this week to choose the toughest
ten contests in the short run of this
year's Pigskin Prognostications.
Yale's Elis and fourth ranked
Auburn head the list this week as
unanimous favorites to triumph
over Cornell and Louisiana State
(the latter much to the chagrin of
Will Grimsley) respectively. North
Carolina and South Carolina are 9-1
picks to whip Wake Forest and
Florida State with Sports
Information Director Barney Cooke
taking the Demon Deacons and
Tommy Bell going with the
Seminoles.
Set as 8-2 favorites are Houston
over Alabama, at night in the
Astrodome, (Wild Bill Nachman
and Teebell dissenting) and Duke to
foil Clemson. Again Bell and
Barney ("I'll either sink or swim
this week!") disagree. The lone 7-3
nod goes to Stanford's Indians who
meet UCLA in the shootout of the
big Pacific Eight quarterbacks
Plunkett and Dummitt. That
treacherous trio of Cooke,
Nachman, and Winston Wood, who
wishes he were going to be there (or
anywhere else), just can't see the
Bruins going down at home.
Tulane is a 6-4 choice to down
Georgia Tech which is still licking
its wounds after tangling with
Auburn. Two toss-ups are listed this
week with Maryland, boasting a one
game winning streak, split with
North Carolina State in the Oyster
Bowl in Norfolk, and, in the
Obscure Game of the Week.
Mississippi State is even with
Southern Mississippi, whom
remember beat Archie last week.
Sports Editor Ernest Dempsey
opened a one game lead over
pursuing Randy Wet by virtue of a
9-1 date last weekend. Hugh
Antrim, caught in the rush of
upsets, trails Wert by a game.
