Virginia Defeated UNC, 1-0, In Soccer Action Yesterday

Cavaliers Are Now 1-0 in ACC Play, While Tarheels Are 0-1-1

In its first ACC game of the
season, the Virginia soccer team
defeated the University of North
Carolina, 1-0, at Chapel Hill
yesterday afternoon.

The only score of the day came
with 10:27 gone in the first
quarter, when Phil Crane pumped
one past UNC's goalie, Scott Haigh,
with an assist from Jack Sherry.

The Cavaliers, who were very
fast at the start and dominated the
opening period, outshot the
Tarheels 17-15.

Although the contest seesawed
back and forth following Crane's
goal, the Virginia defense,
especially the fullbacks, must be
credited for fine play all around.

In probably the most important
match of the season, the booters
face Maryland this Sunday at Curr's
Hill Field.
