Wahoo Quarterback Gets Doubly Nailed By "Demon Deacons"

Are Blackie's Cavaliers In For More Of The Same This Saturday?

Just about everything went
against Virginia's cross-country
squad as the Cavaliers opened their
season over the weekend with a
loss to North Carolina and
North Carolina State.

The harriers, on the road all
morning, found it tough loosening
up and even tougher running
against teams that had been practicing
since August and showed top
form for early season. On top of
this the number one runner.
Phil Meyer, was forced out of
the race with the flu.

Cavaliers Way Back

Both the Tar Heels and State
placed five runners in front of
Virginia's first man Wood, as
the Tarheels were 15-46
and State, 15-49 Meanwhile State
had the top three before
Carolina could get a man in and
trimmed the Far Heels, 23-32.

States premier distance runner
Gareth Hayes, led all runners as he
covered the rather flat five mile
course in Hayes a 4:08
miler led all the way.
Neil Acklcy and Jim Wilkers, performing
superbly for early season,
were two-three. a 4:11
miler was in at 26:24

Widgeon Loses

Carolina's top runner. Larry
Widgeon really had it put to him in
the fourth mile, and could not keep
the pace, running a tired fourth
overall. The Tar Heels also scored
with Bruce Hafemeister in the fifth
slot, but their failure to break up
State's top three killed them off.

Wood and veteran Brew Barron
paced the Cavaliers, but not having Meyer burst their pace since they
often pace themselves according to
Meyer.

Meyer To Return

Meyer will be back this Friday
when the Cavaliers go at home with
Wake Forrest, a team that apparently
has some good freshmen on it.
But the Harriers have not lost to
Wake in quite a long time, and will
be looking to keep their string alive.
