Ruggers Host Richmond

By Bill Nachman
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

Capping off this weekend's
Homecoming activities, the Virginia
Rugby Club puts its A and B sides
against Richmond Sunday afternoon
at Nameless Field.

Richmond tied the A side last
spring in the Commonwealth
Invitational. Fielding a strong
serum, the invaders from the state
capital come to Nameless with a
backfield of unknown quantity.

Top Backline

Virginia, on the other hand,
brings two top backlines and adequate
scrummers. However Club
captain Jay Waldron sums up the
squad by offering, "We have a
plethora (whatever that means) of
experienced backs, but the serum is
only one team deep."

Will O'Keefe paces the serum
from his hooker spot. Will teaches
seventh grade at Powder Ridge. The
props are Ralph Robertson and
Clay Ratterie. Robertson, at loose
herd prop is playing in his fourth
season. Ratterie is a fourth-year
man from Georgia.

Second Row

Jumping in the lineouts is Mike
Scheer. Club president Jay Waldron,
a teacher in the Nelson
County system, mans the other
second row position. Locker John
Pierson, a third year law student, is
a member of the Law Review.

Dwight Van Horne, at wing forward
paces the squad with a 3.8
scholastic average in his fourth
year. Dwight, a member of Phi
Beta Kappa, shows that ruggers are
not dumb creatures flinging themselves
at one another for a few
beers. Holding down the other wing
slot is Byron Shankman. "Train,"
so dubbed because of his ability to
carry players on his back while he
fights for tries, is attending law
school.

Working the ball out to the
backline is serum half Wick
Williams. Sick the latter part of last
season with pneumonia, "West Virginia
Willy" is fully recovered and
ready to return to the pitch. Tom
Furniss, the field captain, is at fly.
Known for his "electric drop kick,"
Tom often is seen at post game
parties wearing a kilt.

Nineteenth Season

Courtney Hoopes, now in his
nineteenth season with Virginia,
performs from inside center.
Coming off a shoulder separation
last May at the Schaeffer Invitational
in New York, Courtney plans
on being ready for plenty of action
and a chance to defend his coveted
drinking title procured in England
during last year's tour.

Fleetness of is provided at
wing by Ronnie Pulliam and Sam
Robinson. Pulliam, a third-year
man in the college, is considered by
many of the squad to be the top
back. "Martinsville Red" is pressed
for speed honors by Robinson at
the other end. Sam, a student of
medicine, used to run a 9.6 100
when he run for the track team in
his undergraduate days. Besides representing
Virginia on the pitch,
Robinson is a member of Student
Council.

'Lost' Fullback

Hidden behind the other fourteen,
though in no way commanding
less respect, is fullback Mark
Storm. Mark earned the kudos of
ruggers throughout the east last
spring when he filled in for Brown
in the finals of the Schaeffer
Tourney.

So there we have them. Fifteen
individuals assembled for a common
cause rugby. Don't miss
them (and the B side) Sunday when
they play at 2 behind the Memorial
Gym.
