Ruggers Fight For Ball In Mayhem Seen At Nameless Field Recently

A,B Sides Host Richmond Sunday Afternoon To Cap Off Homecoming

Rallying in the second half, the
Virginia Rugby A side squirmed
through the muck at Duke to tie
the Blue Devils, 6-6, Sunday afternoon.

Duke gained an early advantage
by posting two scores in the first
half. Bill Harvey, the 'Gray Ghost',
hit on a 40 yard penalty kick
midway through the half to give the
Devils a 3-0 lead.

Late in the period a fluke grub
flow play turned into a try. The
ball, which was intended as a setup,
was carried over the crossbar for
three by the wind. Duke led 6-0 at
halftime.

Virginia had several good scoring
opportunities in the first period but
an inability to get the last five yards
hurt the Cavalier cause.

Thoroughly Drenched

Thoroughly drenched And
muddy the Virginia contingent refused
to quit. Peter Schmidt, offside
center, split the uprights with a
45 yard penalty kick to steady
visitors. Minutes later Clay Ratterie
And Will O'Keefe combined from a
five yard scrum to give Virginia the
tying try.

Sloppy Ball Control

Sloppy ball control by both
teams was expected due to the
storm. The held (or rather that
portion of it that had not been
washed into the football field) provided
the players with mud, muck,
And mire. This mess accounted for
the overplay of kicking for want of
a better means of handling the ball.

Virginia A, with one of the top
backfields in the east, was hindered
During the match by the incessant
rain. "The rain, more than the
inability to take advantage of first
half thrusts, was the factor most
responsible for the results", said
Jay Waldron, team captain.

John Pearson And Mike Scheer
both performed well in the serum.
The fleet back line, despite the
inclement weather, broke for several
long gains one each from wing
Ronnie Pullam And inside center
Courtney Hoopes.

Turques Victorious

The Turques (B) whipped the
second Duke side, 12-3. Completely
dominating play, the Turques won
in lineouts, scrums, And in open
field play.

Butch Dietler, at inside center
after an extended leave from the
pitch, And outside center Joe Gaber
each picked up tries for their afternoon's
efforts.

Next Sunday Virginia hosts
Richmond in A And B action at
Nameless Field. Last time out the
two A sides battled to a tie in the
Richmond Invitational.
