For ACC Title

Stickmen Host Terps

Virginia's Lacrosse team won its
first game ever against Carling
Lacrosse Club in an 11-6 match in
Charlottesville Sunday, But if it
hadn't been for Carling goalie Tony
Federico, who made 25 aves, the
score would have been considerably
higher.

The younger Cavaliers were in
better shape and slowly ran the
older club out of the .
Attack Jay Connor (three
goals and three assists) and Tom
Duquette (one goal and four assists)
led the Virginia scoring parade.

Coach was pleased with
the overall team play in the game, a
revenge w for a 13-11 setback
which closed out last year's season
for Virginia, but he pointed out
that Maryland is net. The contest
with the tough means the
ACC title for the winner,
and if Virginia prevails, it could also
help towards a possible tie for the
national championship if leader
Navy should lose a game. Last year,
Virginia won at College Park (for
the first time ever) 9-7. This year,
Virginia will defend its ACC title at
home and will seek its first home
win over Maryland since 1964. The
overall series stands 5-20 in the
Terps' favor.

Thiel said. "Maryland is one of
the teams we play this

year. Their midfields will probably
be the best we face. Their attack of
John Kaestner, Dave Dempsey, and
Dog Carter is a most dangerous
high scoring unit. We will have to
play smart lacrosse to beat this
team." Maryland led powerful
Army 9-3, before the -up
Cadets pulled the game out with a
ate rally and a 12-11 win.
Maryland ace defenseman Jack
Daily held All-American Army
attackman Pete Cramblet to only
two goals, his lowest output of the
season.

"Our young ball club has come a
long way since the season opened,
and this next game could mean a
share of the national title," Thiel
noted. "It is also the defense of our
ACC title, something the kids very
much want to do."
