Face Penn May Tenth
Malletmen Defeat Yale
The Virginia Polo team
brightened a cloudy Easter's Sunday
to score a stunning victory over
the Intercollegiate Champion Yale
club by a close 7-6 margin.
The play was fast and dangerous
with two goals scored within the
first two minutes and many players
and pones limping off the field
after the game was over.
The Ell team arrived with out
their number one rider Al Harris
forcing his teammates Reed Oppenheimer
and Jim Brandi to enlist the
services of John Cutler, executive
of a large bubble bath corporation.
The malletmen took an early
lead in the first chukka in a fast
3-1 scoring rout. The goals included
an incredible in the air tap-in by
number one David Banks on a loft
by Rob Rinehart playing number
two. It was this finesse which gave
the Cavaliers an early hold on the |. The Elis however characteristically
play a revengeful second
half.
True to form Yale brought the
score up to a threatening 7-6 within
the last two minutes of the fourth
chukka. John Cutler lead a charge
down toward the Virginia goal
which ended in a goalmouth melee.
During the battle Dave Banks was
out of play with a broken mallet,
two ponies were cut or bruised, and
number three Virginia John Stuart
looked even more dazed after the
hard knock he received earlier.
However when the smoke cleared
Rob Rinchart had cleared the ball
and the Cavaliers rode off victorious.
Attending the Easter's game was
a record crowd of some 400 fans,
among whom were the two
founders of University polo, Dan
Hanna and Sandy Bowers. Mr.
Hanna graciously offered his services
and rode as referee during the
match.
Reed Oppenheimer commented
that his mounts were of the best
calibre that he had ever played in
Virginia, due to uncommon diligence
of the University trainers and
grooms.
Scoring tallied to two goals for
each player with the winning goal
being scored by a Rinchart pony,
Daisy of Roundfield Farms.
The University club will resume
play Sunday fortnight against the
University of Pennsylvania, after a
week of rest due to the scheduled
Farmington Horse Show this Sunday
in the Hunt Club area.
