Glovemen Win

By Tom Bell
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

The Cavalier baseball team
exploded for six runs with two out
in the fifth inning yesterday to
wipe out an early Washington and
Lee lead, and went on to an easy
13-4 win over the Generals at
Lambeth Field.

Four Virginia pitchers held W&L
to four hits in the contest, while
the Cavaliers collected nine hits,
including a three-run homer by
catcher Sam Beale in the seventh.
Ed Kihm picked up the win for his
two innings' work, while Bruce
King absorbed the loss. Washington
and Lee pitchers had control
problems as they gave up nine
walks, hit two batters, and let two
runs cross the plate on passed balls.

Walks to leftfielder Robbin
Marvin and Mike Cubbage, a double
steal, and a passed ball gave the
Cavaliers two runs in the third
inning without a hit, as General
starter Bill French had control
trouble, walking four batters in the
inning.

Washington and Lee came back
with three runs in the fifth off
Kihm, who relieved starter Rick
Spigone after three innings, to take
a 3-2 lead before the Cavaliers
struck in the bottom half of the
inning.

Loser King walked Tom
Blackburn, hit Terry Dan with a
pitch and walked pinch hitter Steve
Gardner after two were out in the
fifth. Consecutive singles by Marvin
and Bill Hall brought in three runs
and a new pitcher, Bill Greener.
Centerfielder Steve Bryant and
shortstop Mike Cubbage greeted
him with consecutive doubles,
scoring three more runs and giving
the Cavaliers a commanding 8-3
lead.

A walk to Tom Blackburn,
Terry Dan's single and a passed ball
gave Virginia a run in the sixth,
before the four-run seventh inning
finished Cavalier scoring for the
day.

Marvin led off with a safe bunt,
went to third on a passed ball, and
came home when Jim Sebo reached
base to score his third run of the
day on an error. Then, after
Cubbage walked, Beale blasted a
pitch over the right field wall to
drive in three runs.
