Notes
Coach Lefty Driesell has firmly
established his "New Era" in
collegiate basketball at the University
of Maryland. In one season as
the Terp Mentor he has established
new attendance records, sold out
the field house for 1970-71 before
the 1970 season was completed,
and in his first year won more
games than the Terps had won in
either of the past three years.
During the recent State Indoor
Track Championships Cavalier thinclads
broke seven school marks and
set two new state indoor marks.
Even more encouraging to head
coach Lou Onestyand assistant Jim
Holdren was 17 Cavalier athletes
setting new career indoor bests.
The North Carolina Tarheels will
put their pride and prestige on the
line Saturday afternoon when they
face Manhattan in the first-round of
the National Invitation Tournament
in New York's Madison Square
Garden. Upset by Virginia in the
first round of last week's ACC
Tournament, the Tar Heels have
high hopes of bouncing back in
their first NIT appearance.
Baseball Commissioner Bowie
Kuhn says he doesn't anticipate a
strike for the opening of the new
season because the players mood is
"to play ball."
The Virginia Basketball Club
will honor this year's Cavalier
varsity next Tuesday night with a
banquet in Newcomb Hall. Bill
Chambers, former coach at William
and Mary, will be the featured
speaker.
