Karate Club Organized

By Ernest Dempsey
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

A group of University students,
headed by Lee Cheshire and John
Carrel, is in the process of forming
a Karate club, open to all students
and members of the faculty.

The group has secured the
services of Mr. Sung II. Hong, a
seventh degree black belt in Karate,
and a fourth degree black belt in
Kendo, the art of Oriental fencing.
He is teaching the club in the Myo
Sin style of Karate which is taught
along with a comprehensive course
in self-defense against molesters,
street attacks, and assault with
weapons.

A special self-defense course,
which, according to Mr. Carrel,
"will teach grace, coordination, and
be a great aid in figure control," is
being offered to girls.

Classes are now being held
Monday and Wednesday nights
from 9 to 11 p.m. p.m., in the
Wrestling room at Memorial Gym.
Mr. Hong teaches every Wednesday
night, and Monday nights are
devoted to the practice of different
techniques.

Mr. Carrel emphasized that no
experience is necessary for membership
in the club. Those interested
can attend a session at any time,
and begin Karate instruction from
the first lesson.

According to Mr. Hong, "The
art of Karate teaches balance,
co-ordination, self-discipline, and
improves concentration, while importing
to the individual a dynamic
means of self-defense, and sense of
well being.

The club's enrollment is now
only 17, but its members are
looking forward to rapid growth in
the future.
