Case, Only Senior On Squad, Had 19 Points; Maryland, Tournament Games Will Finish His Season

Led to their seventh win of the
season by the scoring of Jim
Hobgood and Larry Gerry, the
Cavayearling basketball team
whipped Randolph-Macon 111-60
Saturday night in University Hall.

The two first-year men combined
for a total of 49 points in
Virginia's biggest win of the year. It
was the third time the squad was
able to score in triple figures.
Scoring 71 points in a wild and
woolly second period, the Cavayearlings
led 40-21 at halftime. The
team shot 51.3 percent for the
evening, compared to the Yellowjacket's
meager 26.5.

Hobgood led the scoring with 25
points, Gerry followed with 24.
Barry Parkhill trailed with 15 (well
below his average 26-plus). Pat
Patrick came next with 12, and Jim
Small followed with 11. Only three
of the visitors from Ashland were
able to hit for double figures. Phil
Kearney led the lot with 14, sinking
a total of 6 of 19 from the floor.

Randolph-Macon beat this same
Cavayearling team earlier this year
by 20 points, 58-78. One possible
explanation for the complete turnaround
in the rematch is that Tim
Cullen, high scorer for the Yellowjackets
did not play. He has since
transferred to Virginia Tech.

Starting slowly, Virginia took
the lead for keeps with two and a
half minutes gone in the first
quarter, 12-3. Parkhill paced the
team with some nifty behind the
back passes that smacked of the
show-off, but he never let it get out
of hand. Passing off to spark many
fast breaks, he led the squad with
seven assists.

Turnovers cost Randolph-Macon
the most troubles, 20 of them to be
more specific. With only two
members of their team measuring
over six feet, time after time they
lost the ball on the boards to the
6-3 Gerry and 6-4 Hobgood. Under
their own basket, it is easily seen
why these two were high scorers for
the night.

The first-year men now stand
7-5 for the season, this being their
third win in a row. Whipping both
George Washington and Roanoke
College away, the Cavayearlings will
host Hampden Sydney tonight at
5:55 in their last home appearance.
