Virginia's Fencing Club opened
its 1970 season on a losing note,
dropping two of three matches to
out-of-state opponents.

The Virginia team is a club,
recently recognized by the ACC,
that competes against varsity opposition
in both the ACC and
Southeastern conferences.

Friday night the Virginia effort
was squelched by top ranked Duke
6-21. Captain Steve Hatten, winning
all three of his bouts, had an
outstanding performance against
the Blue Devils. The highlight came
when Hatten beat Duke's number
one foulest, previously undefeated,
score of 5-1. Other individual
contributions were made by
Dave Seroskie and Bill
Adams, winning two and one
matches, respectively.

On Saturday morning Virginia
defeated The Citadel 15-12. The
sabre team carried the Cavaliers to
victory compiling a 7-2 record. The
foil and epee teams were each 4-5
for the morning. Saberman Evan
Robinson and foilist Hatten compiled
perfect records with three
wins while newcomer Charlie Hurt
had two wins without defeat.
Double wins were also contributed
by Bill Adams and Joe Stegmaier
and single victories were posted by
Setoskie, Will Burr, and Jack Cofer.

The Fencers lost a closely
contested match with Clemson on
Saturday afternoon, 17-10. Nine of
the bouts were decided by one
point and this provided Clemson
with the margin of victory. The
team compiled a 4-5 record,
with the foil and sabre teams
sharing a 3-6 mark. Once again
Steve Hatten won all three of his
bouts. Robinson, Adams, and
Seroskie each won two, and Joe
Stegmaler contributed one.

The Fencing team has a conference
record of 1-2, and an overall
record of 2-4. The team is led by
Steve Hatten, a member of last
year's all-conference team, sported
an undefeated mark through the
weekend.
