Flu-Ridden Mermen Beat
Keydets With Eleven Men

By Ernest Dempsey

Coach Ron Good's intense conditioning
program was apparent
yesterday as the Virginia swimmers
swamped the VMI Keydets by a
score of 70-34 at Memorial Gym
pool.

Virginia had four 1-2 finishes and
Don Farmer set a new pool record
with a 2:09.2 clocking in the
200-yard backstroke.

Jack Martin and John Shrum led
the Cavalier onslaught with two
wins apiece. In rounding out a
perfect day, both swimmers were
members of the victorious 400-yard
freestyle relay team.

Jim Bohnaker also did an
outstanding job for the Virginia
tankers as a member of the
400-yard freestyle relay team, and a
second place finisher in both the
200-yard butterfly and the 1,000yard
freestyle. His come from
behind win in the latter event was
one of the meet's highlights.

The 200-yard individual medley
was also a very close and exciting
race as Virginia's Gerry Rollins and
VMI's Dave Wilder had identical
times of 2:17.5. However, Rollins
managed to touch out his opponent
for the win.

Yesterday's meet was the last
home encounter of the season and,
hopefully, the last varsity swim
meet in the Memorial Gym pool.
The Virginia swimmers now possess
a 6-3-1 record.
