Cavayearlings Bow, 75-63
As Parkhill Nets 23 Points

By John Antrim

A six minute shooting drought
and a poor field shooting
percentage doomed the
Cavayearlings to their fifth loss in
nine starts, 75-63, falling to the
Baby Turtles of Maryland.

The Cavayearlings jumped off to
an early lead 5-0 in the opening
moments, but later on three quick
baskets by Jim O'Brien and two by
Howard White gave the Baby Terps
the lead 20-11, advantage which they
did not lose until the waning
moments of the first half when the
Cavaliers went ahead 30-28, with
2:15 left. Barry Parkhill kept
Virginia in the game in the first
half, hitting six field goals and three
foul shots, but in the meanwhile he
picked up three personal fouls. A
layup by Maryland's Jim Shelby
tied the score 32-32 as the teams
hit the locker room for
intermission.

The Cavayearlings got the tap
opening the second half, and that
was the only thing that went right
for them for the remainder of the
game. With 17:42 left on the clock,
Jim Hobgood fired a three point
play - the last points Virginia was to
see for the ensuing six minutes.

The Baby Terps took advantage
of this lapse by opening up a 50-37
lead on a ten point spurt by
redhead Jim O'Brien. Larry Gerry
hit on a 25 foot jumper to break
the point drought for Virginia with
11:42 remaining, but the damage
was done.

Two minutes later Coach Dick
DiBiaso called a time out and
instigated a full-court press. This
move temporarily stalled the Baby
Terp attack and enabled the Cavayearlings
to pull within seven points
with six minutes left, 60-53.

At this juncture -handed
Barry Parkhill fouled out, after
having pumped in 23 points for the
Virginians.

Larry Gerry was soon to follow
Parkhill to the bench, picking up
his fifth foul, as the Cavaliers were
plagued by personals during the
whole . Even with these
starters out, Virginia fought back to
cut the Terp lead to six in the
waning moments of the game on
the shooting of Jim Hobgood and
the hustle of Jim Small.

All-State high schooler, Jim
O'Brien, while not finding favor
with the crowd, did lead the Terps
throughout the game, scoring 35
points and grabbing 12 rebounds.
Darrell Brown added balanced
scoring, sealing the Cavayearlings
fate. He added 12 points and pulled
down 14 rebounds.

Barry Parkhill, though fouling
out with plenty of time remaining,
lead the Cavalier scoring effort with
23 points, while Jim Hobgood and
Jim Farmer both tallied in double
figures, Hobgood with 18 and
Farmer with 11. The Virginia
rebounding figures were evenly
distributed with Gerry and
Hobgood both accounting for nine
caroms.

The Cavayearlings shot a poor
31 percent from the floor, while
the Baby Turtles of College Park
poured in 50 percent of their
attempts. Other than these statistics
the teams appeared to be evenly
matched in rebounding, turnovers,
and foul shooting.

Coach DiBiaso's squad meets
Roanoke College Friday in
Roanoke in hopes of repeating the
likes of their earlier triumph in
University Hall, 107-78.
