Indian Comeback Foils
Wrestlers' Effort, 21-14
By Tom Bell
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer
Losses in the final four matches,
two of them by pins, destroyed the
Cavaliers' hopes for an upset win
over strong William and Mary, as
the young wrestling team went
down to defeat 21-14 in University
Hall Saturday night.
The Indians, who came into the
match sporting an undefeated 5-0-1
record, trailed 14-5 after the
158-pound match, but showed
exceptional strength in the upper
weights to keep their record
unblemished.
The turning point of the match
came in the 177-pound class when
Ted Moore, leading in the second
period by a 4-2 score, was reversed
and suddenly pinned by the
Indians' Todd Christenson with 26
seconds left in the period. This
reduced a six point Virginia lead at
14-8 to a one point, 14-13, margin.
The Cavaliers' hopes completely
collapsed in the final two matches
as Paul Bohm, after wrestling
opponent Scott Moyer to a 0-0
deadlock in the opening two
periods, dropped a 3-0 decision at
190, and Dick Opp was pinned by
Indian heavyweight Doug
Freberger with 1:44 gone in the
first period.
The Cavaliers showed strength in
the lower weights in jumping off to
an early lead. After 118-pounder
Kim Hatcher dropped an opening
9-2 decision to W&M's undefeated
Lonnie Parker, Virginia picked up
four wins and a draw in the next
five matches to open up a wide
lead. John Pitas, Lou Pavia, Shelley
Zablow, and Lynn Housner were
the winners, while John Pegues
came out with a draw. Pavia,
Zablow and Housner were praised
by Coach George Edwards after the
match.
The matmen now sport a 6-3
record. They face Duke and
N.C.State next weekend in away
matches.
