Track, Wrestling, Swimming
Teams Resume Play
By Tom Bell
Cavalier wrestling, track, and
swimming teams get back into
action this weekend as they open
their second semester schedules.
The track team heads for
Lexington and the VMI Relays,
which will feature some of the top
track teams in the South and East
including Maryland, Tennessee,
William and Mary, and most other
Virginia and Carolina teams.
Top hopes for the Cavaliers in
the meet are Jim Shannon in the
long jump and Al Sinesky in the
shop put. Sinesky recently finished
second in the Jaycee meet in
Richmond, losing the shot
52′10½″. Two strong relay teams
also have high hopes going into the
meet. The mile relay team of John
Morris, Bob Niles, Julian Solotorovsky,
and Dick Morris took a second
place finish in its section at the
D.C. Invitational Meet in January
and was seventh overall out of forty
teams.
The wrestling squad spent
semester break at Penn State
University working out with the
from Coach George Edwards'
school. According to Edwards,
the workouts helped his squad get
back into shape after the long
Christmas break and exam period.
William and Mary is expected to
be a tough opponent, having
already outdone the Cavaliers in the
state meet in December. The match
will begin at 7:30 p.m. In pre-exam
action the wrestlers had a 2-2
record in a five-team match in
Pennsylvania.
Coach Ron Good's swimmers
take on Duke Saturday in a 3:30
p.m. home meet. Good says that
Duke is "strong where we're strong
and weak where we're weak. We
should be favored going into the
meet, but we'll have to be up to
win."
Three swimmers have been lost
to the team for the rest of the
season. The departure of Henley
Guild. Bob Sinnott, and Richard
Dougherty will hurt the team's
depth, u the addition of diving
captain J.I. Wainwright, who became
eligible at the start of the new
semester, should help.
In pre-exam action the Cavaliers
whipped Clemson 78-26, as Gary
Chewning led the way with two
firsts, one of which broke his own
school record in the 200-meter
medley with a time of 2:12.2. The
team is now 4-3-1 overall and 1-2 in
the ACC.
