First Yearmen Star
In Holiday Classic

While University students were
just beginning to get their Florida
suntans, Coach George Edwards
was putting his wrestling charges
through the grind of the State
Tourney held December 19-20 in
Norfolk.

Pitted against such tough foes as
VPI, W&M, and ODU, the grapplers
snatched six second places. Kim
Hatcher (118), John Pitas (126),
Dave Damico (134), Sheldon Zablow
(142), John Pegues (150), and
Kevin Michaels (177), all worked
their way into the final round.

The tourney, though no team
title was given this year, sparked a
great amount of individual competition.
If team titles had been kept,
Virginia would have placed second
behind William and Mary.

"I was especially pleased the
way our first-year men performed
in the tournament," said Coach
Edwards, "of course this in no way
is to take hard-earned credit away
from my fine upperclassmen."

This weekend the squad travels
to Shippensburg, Pa. to participate
in a 5-school round-robin tourney.
Wrestling two matches on both
Friday and Saturday, a team crown
will be given at the end of the
bouts. Other schools in the tourney
will be Edinboro, Kulztown, Mansfield,
and Shippensburg.

"It might seem strange that
Virginia should find itself in a
Pennsylvania wrestling tournament,"
surmised Edwards, "but I
didn't want the boys to get but so
stale during exams."

The squad returns to University
Hall February 7 to meet W&M.
