Chip Case Goes Up For Two Of His Nine Points Against VMI

Those hapless hoopsters tasted
victory for the first time in a while,
blasting the VMI Keydets 65-44,
before some 2,200 in University
Hall Wednesday evening.

The Cavaliers needed a great
defensive effort in the second half
to pull it off. Behind 21-8, the
eagers rallied to a 22-20 deficit at
intermission, sparked by timely
shooting from Frank DeWitt and
Scott McCandlish.

Coach Gibson's troupe went
from a 22-24 count to a 51-28
advantage in just 13 minutes. The
ever-truthful stat sheet reveals the
fact that VMI tallied seven points
during a 20 minute span in which
the Cavaliers scored a whopping 43
points.

From the 51-28 lead Kevin
Kennelly directed the Virginians
toward the 65-44 finish. Frank
DeWitt finished as high man for the
Cavaliers with 16 points. Scott
McCandish turned in a 13 point
effort, and John Hill tallied double
figures with eleven.

Those with short memories be
reminded that the last time USC
ventured to Charlottesville, the
Gamecocks got crunched 86-70 in
what may have been the Cavaliers
finest effort of the season. Coach
McQuire's pride and scalp were a
bit dampened as he trod of the
court.
