Vols Stun South Carolina,
Purdue Upset By Ohio U.
It was Saturday night, and the
surest, smoothest winners around
were stood up, each by what should
have been easy marks.
Rick Mount, the Purdue bomber
whose shooting put the Boilermakers
into the national rankings
and the NCAA tournament last
year, hit for 25 points in a losing
cause, as unheralded Ohio University
took an 80-79 upset decision at
Athens, Ohio. Third-ranked Purdue
was forced to battle the Bobcats
throughout the game, with neither
team showing a consistent lead.
South Carolina, playing before
12,363 at Columbia, S.C., lost its
number-one status to unranked
Tennessee. The Volunteers' Canadian
6-10 center, Bobby Croft,
volunteered to clear the boards for
the Gamecocks, and his rebounding
gave the visitors the advantage.
Tennessee's 55-54 margin came
after a seesaw duel in the second
half, with the trailing Gamecocks
forced to foul.
In Atlantic Coast Conference
action, Vann Williford had 29
points in 27 minutes to lead North
Carolina State to a 105-59 breeze
over the Citadel. Eight thousand
fans at Raleigh saw th
