Jefferson Party

1. Human Relations

a) We support as the most
realistic and feasible measure for
recruitment of high school students
from disadvantaged backgrounds a
program involving visitation by
selected students for one week's
time in order to observe first hand
the University's academic and social
environment, as guests of interested
University students.

b) We advocate an increase in
the course offerings dealing with
ethnic studies in anticipation of the
interdepartmental majors program
proposed by the Curriculum Evaluation
Committee of the Faculty.

2. ROTC

We support the presence of the
Reserve Officers Training Corps at
the University in an attempt to
insure academic freedom for those
students who desire courses in
military science as a part of their
general courses of study. We do
feel, however, that the ROTC
program should be redesigned
largely on the Princeton model to
make its academic value consistent
with that of other liberal arts
courses offered at the college.

3. Coeducation

We support the Board of Visitor's
three year proposal as the
most expedient method for making
the transition from an all made to a
coeducational institution.

4. First Year Cars

We believe that the most workable
approach to the issue of cars for
the first year would be a dual-sticker
system which would allow
cars to be operated on all weekends
of the second semester by those
first-year men who had obtained a
2.0 GPA. We believe this proposal
to be most amenable to all parties
involved.

5. Curriculum Re-evaluation

We endorse the reforms proposed
by the Curriculum Evaluation
Committee of the Faculty. We
further propose, the liberalization
of advanced credit for first-year
man through the offering of University
placement tests. We place
special emphasis on the need for a
trimester or comparable calendar
system from our studies of these
systems at Loyola University of
New Orleans and the University of
Pittsburgh.

6. Internal Reforms of Student Government

a) we wholeheartedly endorse
the Student Council Constitution
and support its ratification in the
forthcoming election.

b) we propose an official referendum
on selected significant issues
whose implementation must realistically
depend on large scale
student support.
