Notre Dame Accepts Bowl Bid,
Alabama Makes It 11 In Row

Notre Dame and the University
of Tennessee have accepted invitations
to play in post-season bowl
games, it was announced yesterday.
The Fighting Irish will play in the
thirty-fourth annual Cotton Bowl
in Dallas on New Year's Day, and
UT in the twenty-fifth annual
Gator Bowl on December 27.

Breaking from forty-five years
of tradition, it will be the first time
that Notre Dame has appeared in
one of the post-season classics since
Knute Rockne took his Four
Horsemen to the 1925 Rose Bowl.
Beating Stanford 27-10 was the
only occasion on which the Indiana
school has played in a bowl game.

7-1-1 for the season, the Irish
will act as the visitors with the host
team not being decided upon until
December sixth. It will be on that
date that second-ranked Texas
meets fifth-ranked Arkansas in
Fayetteville. Ark, with both the
Southwest Conference title and the
bowl hid hanging in the balance.

Tennessee, which blew its
Orange Bowl chance in a 38-0 loss
to Mississippi Saturday, will meet
either Florida or Nebraska. Previously
third-ranked, the Vols won
seven games in a row before taking
its first loss from three time loser
Ole Miss. As of this writing. Florida
seems to have the inside track on
the other bid.

With the announcement of the
Notre Dame and the Tennessee
invitations, this makes four bowl
games that have made their plans
definite. Penn State will play in the
Orange Bowl and Alabama will
travel to the Liberty Bowl.

Bear Bryant will be taking his
Crimson Tide to its eleventh consecutive
bowl game, 6-3 for the
season, Alabama only has one more
game this year, that with traditional
rival Auburn on Nov. 29.

A spokesman for the Bowl said
five teams were still under consideration
for the second spot. They
included Air Force. Colorado, Kansas
State. Nebraska, and Oklahoma.
