Eager To End Scenes Of Dejection Like This Last Weekend In Wake Game, Wahoos Invade New Orleans

Luckless, erratic, uncertain Virginia
will have a lot to think about
on the plane trip to New Orleans
this morning.

Winless in five outings, four of
them successive, the Wahoos will be
facing a hungry Tulane that is
looking for a second straight upset
win. Alone, this is enough to worry
them considering that the 'Hoos are
a slim one point favorite. Blowing
their final home game of the season
in the last minute of play to an
even more erratic Wake Forest,
Virginia will be trying to salvage a
500 season after letdown losses to
North Carolina and, worst of all,
Navy. In his fifth year as head
coach, George Blackburn carries a
24-24-0 career record into this
game down in Sin City, and a fifth
straight loss would send his record
here in Charlottesville careening
below the 50-50 mark.

The Cavaliers will enter the
match with Green Wave in as good
physical condition as they've seen
all year. Of the team that first
stepped on the field against Clemson
back in September, only Bob
Bressen is out of the picture.
Back-up quarterback Mike Cubbage
is also out and is expected to
remain so for the rest of the season.

In scouting the Green Wave,
offensive line coach Tom Fletcher
warns that their paltry 2-6 record is
hardly indicative of the brand of
football Tulane can play. They have
a schedule that would make even
the most ambitious head coach
think twice. Dropping contests to
the likes of Georgia, Florida, Notre
Dame, and West Virginia, they will
step on to their home field fresh
from a 14-7 win over Georgia Tech
and smelling like a rose. Coming
into this game with a victory like
that could give them just enough
momentum to blow the Cavaliers
right out of the Sugar Bowl.
