Harriers Host ACC Meet

A hilly, five-mile course
located somewhere in the
Copley Hill area behind
University Hall, provides the
setting for the 17th Annual
Atlantic Coast Conference
Cross Country Championship.

The Terrapins of Maryland
are favorites to defend their
ACC crown, but a strong
challenge is expected to come
from harriers of North Carolina
State and Clemson. Duke and
North Carolina should provide
tough competition as well.

Turtle Charlie Schrader, top
finisher in last fall's conference
meet, will be back to defend his
individual title. Schrader has led
Maryland to a 6-0 record overall,
and four straight conference
victories.

Challenging Schrader for the
lead should be Duke's Mike Graves,
Graves has spent much of the
season recovering from a strained
back, but if the Blue Devil is
healthy, he is capable of heroic
deeds. Graves placed 10th last
spring in the NCAA 10,000 meters.

Of the 86 athletes appearing
N.C. State's Garth Hayes,
Carolina's Kenny Helm, South
Carolina's David Peddle,
Clemson's Richie Furst are
expected to shoot for the top.

One other jewel in the lineup is
Virginia's Rick Katz. Katz paced
the Cavaliers to a third place finish
at the State Meet in Lexington
Friday. Virginia has won three dual
meets this season, and Coach Lou
Onesty hopes to better last fall's
sixth place finish in the ACC
contest.

The flood gates are let open at 2-pm,
and 86 runners will be setting
off on the five mile Faulkner
course.
