Horsemen Whip Elis, 6-3
As Rinehart Scores Four
Cavalier Horsemen Ride Against Cornell In Early Season Action At Brook Hill Farm
Virginia Polo Club Handed Elis Of Yale 6-3 Decision Sunday To Up Record To 4-1-1
Second-year man Rob Rinehart
slid four goals past the Elis leading
the Virginia polo team to a 6-3
victory over Yale.
A meager crowd of 100 turned
out on a damp Sunday afternoon to
see the. Cavaliers chalk up their
fourth win on a season that
includes one loss and a tie.
The Cavalier offense was able to
control their attack better Sunday
than they had in several previous
outings. Rather than bunching up,
the Virginia riders took the attack
to the Elis in what John Cutler
termed "good stylish play."
Although the Cavaliers yielded
three goals to the Yalies, a third
chukkar burst accounted for two
scores and enough momentum to
carry Virginia to the 6-3 finish.
Yale, however, was not at full
strength as Virginia polo club
member John Stuart was called
upon to fill in for the missing Jim
Brady. Brady had missed plane
connections in New Haven due to
Law Board examinations.
The Virginia riders meet the Ox
Ridge Polo Club this Sunday at
Brook Hill Farm. Ox Ridge fields a
strong four-goal team out of Darien,
Connecticut, and should feature
fine Openings Weekend competition.
Each January the Intercollegiate
polo tourney is held. This event is
sanctioned by the NCAA and the
USPA, and there is growing speculation
that the tournament will be
held this winter in Houston's
Astrodome. Apparently Stan Carp,
a University alumnus and an official
of Sportsworld, Inc. is interested in
setting up the tourney in the
Astrodome, and his organization
appears willing to furnish the
ponies and pick up the tab.
