At Lexington Friday Night

Rats Trip Cavayearlings, 35-28

By John Mason Antrim

It was a long ride back to
Charlottesville for the Cavayearlings
Friday night after they had lost in
the final minutes to the Rats of
VMI, 35-28 in Lexington.

The Cavalier offense posted 28
points which regularly would spell a
win. Wahoo quarterback Bill Troup,
a 6-4 196 pounder from
Pennsylvania, tore apart the Rat
secondary and completed 16 of 32
passes for 237 yards and three
touchdowns. On the receiving end
of most of the Troup aerials was
Dennis Ford who caught all three
TD passes.

The rugged Wahoo defensive
secondary held VMI's sputtering
pass attack, but the line had their
problems with the potent Keydet
running attack. VMI halfback
Dorsy Smallwood scored three of
the four Rat touchdowns rushing.

With the score tied 28 all with
4:30 left in the game, Randy
Kinsey fired a 36 yard scoring
bomb to Steve Conlan to give the
Keydets the margin of victory. The
Wahoos had their hands on the ball
twice after the score but were
unable to pull the game out of the
fire.

Penalties plagued the
Cavayearlings throughout the game.
These infractions thwarted the
offense and stymied the defense as
the Wahoos were assessed 151
yards.

This loss gives the first-year men
a 1-2-1 record going into their final
game of the season at Williamsburg
with the Indians of William and
Mary.
