Burris Praises Early Teamwork
Taylor, Abramson, Conner Shine

"It's tough to single out one or
two boys because soccer is a game
played by 11 people," said soccer
coach Gordon Burris, "but the
three standouts on the squad so far
have been Jay Connor, John Taylor,
and Dan Abramson."

Second-year man Jay Conner is
the early offensive leader with four
goals in two games. In the team's
last outing Conner broke a 0-0 tie
with VMI by ramming in a goal in
double overtime. Playing at the
inside right position on the forward
wall, he teams with Steve Tannelly,
Fred McGlynn, and Phil Crane to
give the Cavaliers a solid frontal
attack.

"Conner is a very good player,"
said Coach Burris, "one of the
greatest soccer players to ever
attend the University. He is the
spearhead for the squad - our
quarterback."

John Taylor, a fourth-year man
from Westown, Pa., is playing at
center half this season. He has been
a starter ever since he came to the
University, starting here the same
season that Coach Burris made his
debut.

"Taylor is well educated in the
sport. He's the kind of boy who is
really valuable to a team since he is
superb on both offense and defense,"
remarked Burris. "Despite a
bum knee, he is awfully strong for a
boy 5′10″ 170 lbs. Last game
Taylor was racked up pretty hard,
but moments later he came roaring
back."

Transferring from left wing in
his second year, John has played a
forward the last three seasons. He is
a vital key to the new offensive
alignment employed by Burris.

Direct from the soccer fields of
Arlington, Dan Abramson, a
fourth-year man, has had a hot
hand in the erases of the goal so
far this season. He shut out the
VMI Keydets last time out and
blanked Clemson in the opener
with help from back-up man Jim
Glaser, a third-year man from
Richmond.

"Dan is very sound in fundamentals
with an uncanny ability to
cover the goal well," said Burris.
"Though he is not particularly fast,
he makes up for his lack of speed
by employing several years of
experience."

Tomorrow the soccer team lays
its two game win skein on the line
as they travel to Lexington to meet
Washington and Lee. W&L brings a
three game streak into the match.
