Wolfpack Takes Weekend Meet
As Cavalier Harriers Place Third

By Mike DeCamps
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

North Carolina State, led by one
of the conference's outstanding
distance men, Gareth Hayes,
showed surprising depth in defeating
both the North Carolina and
Virginia cross-country teams here
Saturday afternoon.

Virginia's Rick Katz was the
only Cavalier harrier to finish in the
top ten as the Virginia team
absorbed a double loss to Carolina,
20-41, and State, 19-36. North
Carolina-State defeated their rival
North Carolina squad, 27-29.

Hayes, running a steady pace,
led practically the whole way with
splits of 5:10 at the mile, 10:31 at
the two mile, and 27:16 at the
finish. Neil Ackley, his teammate,
followed with a 27:52 clocking,
and then Katz at 28:30.

North Carolina's first two men,
Mark Gibson and Pat Grady, came
in fourth and fifth, but Carolina's
best two runners, Kenny Helms and
Larry Widgeon both were sick and
performed below par, finishing
seventh and eighth.

On the whole, the Cavalier
thinclads had a rough day of it.
Brew Barron was the only other
Virginia runner to stay up front at
the start, but fell back to twelfth
by the end of the race.

The Cavaliers will next go
against Wake Forest on Friday; the
Deacons should prove to be a less
formidable opponent for the harriers.
Later in the season the team
must face Atlantic Coast Conference
powers Duke and Maryland,
but also have easier meets with VMI
and Old Dominion.
