Stickmen Down Terps, 9-7

Virginia came up with an ACC
title in lacrosse Saturday by
whipping Maryland at College Park,
9-7. Never before have the Cavaliers
beat the Terps on their home
grounds and not since 1964 has
Virginia won the conference crown.

In a tough well-fought game the
scorers for Virginia well Charlie
Rullman and Jim Potter. Each
collected four goals. The other tally
came from first-year middle Pete
Eldredge.

Play was slow to begin, with the
defenses holding down the attacks.
The Cavaliers were the first to score
with Potter taking a pass from Jay
Connor. A little later Potter upped
the Virginia lead to 2-0.

Maryland brought the first
period scoring to a close when they
scored on an extra man situation.

The Terps Reed Kaestner
evened the mark with a few
minutes gone in the second period
on another extra man situation.

But then Virginia took over on
the scoring of Rullman who hit for
two unassisted goals and Eldredge
who got one.

At intermission the score stood
5-2 Virginia. Maryland opened up
the third quarter with three goals
coming from Hugh Mallon and
John Kaestner. With the score tied
at five all, a fight erupted which
caused play to be halted.

The Cavaliers only had a slight
edge in the statistics department.
Virginia's attack was more
proficient shooting 44 times to
Maryland's 43. Virginia's ball
control game was about the same as
Maryland's in capturing ground
balls; the Cavaliers had 68, the
Terps, 65. Face-offs also went to
Virginia, 11-9.

Performing well as he has all
season, Cavalier goalie Jim Eustace
had 13 saves to his credit.

Virginia now carries a 6-2 record
with two games remaining on the
schedule. Washington & Lee will
play here this Wednesday.

With Navy defeating the
powerful Hopkins lacrosse team
yesterday, the Cavalier stickmen
stand a good chance of placing high
in the final national rankings. Navy
downed Virginia a few weeks ago,
6-5, on some last period scores.

The quarter's scoring was ended
again tied at 6-6 on goals coming
from Virginia's Rullman and
Maryland's Barton Ellinger.

Potter took over the attack in
the fourth period on two quick
goals to put the Cavaliers ahead to
stay. Later Maryland came to
within one, but Rullman then
collected his fourth of the
afternoon to give Virginia the 9-7
win and the championship of the
ACC.
