Split With Wake

Mittmen Down Duke

Virginia's baseball team won
two of three ACC games over the
weekend to run their record to 5-7
in the ACC and 14-10 overall. On
Friday the Cavaliers downed Duke
6-1 and, on Saturday, split with
Wake Forest 5-6 and 5-2.

In the Duke game Virginia
tallied four runs in the sixth inning
to ice their season series with the
Blue Devils, 2-1. Joel DeBoe
reached on an error to lead off the
inning. A double by Buzzy Schultz
down the right field line advanced
DeBoe to third and then Steve
Bryant slammed a triple over the
rightfielder's head for two RBI.
Mike Cubbage, the next batter,
sacrificed Bryant home.

On Saturday the Cavaliers
salvaged a split with Wake Forest
when they racked up three runs in
the fourth frame of the second game
for a 3-1 advantage. Mike Cubbage
provided the big blow with a two
RBI triple. Cubbage later scored on
an error.

Jimmy Poole, who won the first
game as a pitcher, homered for the
Demon Deacons off of Dave Greer
in the fifth. The hit was one of only
five Greer surrendered in going the
distance.

After Robbin Marvin was hi by
a pitch and stole second he was
advanced to third on a groundout.
Co-captain Dave Counts' single
chased Marvin home for the fourth
run.

The Blue Devils scored their run
in the second inning. Bryan
Bechow beat out an infield single
the third and last hit pitcher Ed
Kihm was to give up. Bochow stole
second and was sacrificed to third.
A fielding error by shortstop Mike
Judkins allowed the runner to
score.

Kihm struck out nine, walked
two and raised his hard luck record
to 3-2.

In the first game Wake
converted two hits and two errors
into three runs in the seventh and
final inning to escape with a 6-5
victory.

A two run homer by catcher

Dave Counts in the fourth had put
the Cavaliers in front.

The Cavaliers close out their
current home stand with a single
game against Virginia Tech, 24-3,
tomorrow at two o'clock. The
winner captures the State Big Five
Championship.
