Burris 'Pleased' As Cavaliers
Capture Last Home Match

Whatever it is that makes a
winning tennis team the 1969
Virginia netters have it. Their
performance on the Lady Astor
Courts yesterday against
Randolph-Macon was once again no
less than spectacular as they
demolished the Yellowjackets for
their second 9-0 rout in two days.

In captain Mike Eikenberry's
match at the number one position
the fourth-year Cavalier downed
Larry Krieger, 6-3, 6-3. Krieger had
extended Eikenberry to three sets
last year, but in the return match
Eikenberry demonstrated an
unbeatable combination of power
and consistency.

Jeff Podesta, playing his usually
consistent baseline game, downed
R-MC's Tommy Gale, who had
been promoted from the number
four spot to the second position
earlier during the week when the
regular second singles player had
been struck from the roster, by a
score of 6-1, 6-0.

Andy Scheinman had one of the
tougher matches of the afternoon
on the third court as he battled his
way to a 6-2, 6-2 decision over the
Yellowjackets' Dennis Velie.
Meanwhile, one court down John
Winter was hitting winners right
and left as he quickly disposed of
Charles McFall, 6-1, 6-0.

Due to the loss of two of his
starting players earlier in the week
the Yellowjacket coach had
hurriedly recruited two
non-scholarship boys that morning
from the Randolph-Macon
cafeteria. Consequently, Coach
Burris, expecting a minimum of
competition from these late
recruits, was not at all hesitant to
substitute reserves Bob Kain and
John Mertz at the fifth and sixth
positions. Responding well to the
challenge, Kain and Mertz promptly
clobbered their opponents, 6-0, 6-0.

In doubles play the Cavaliers
continued to dominate the match
as the Virginia duo of Eikenberry
and Podesta was first off the court
with a 6-3, 6-4 victory recorded
over Krieger and Gale.

The experimental combination
of John Mertz and John Winter was
about as successful as anyone could
possibly hope in smashing Velie and
McFall of R-MC, 6-0, 6-0.

At the third position Doug
Waterman played his first doubles
match of the year as he teamed
with Bob Kain to wrap up the 9-0
victory, the Cavaliers twelfth in
fourteen outings, with a 6-0, 6-1
decision over Dinglidine and
Fitzpatrick.
