Middleburg Falls

Polo Club's Record Remains Perfect

By Davis Marshall

Virginia's Polo team remained
undefeated with a five-four decision
over Middleburg last Sunday afternoon
at Brook Hill Farm. The
Cavalier horsemen took advantage
of a two goal handicap to stifle a
Middleburg comeback to garner
their fifth triumph of the spring
campaign.

Leading the Middleburg
contingent was Colonel Harry
Wilson, perhaps the finest Polo
player Charlottesville has ever seen.
The fiftyish gentleman received the
highest goal rating, five, of any
Cadet ever while attending West
Point.

Also during his undergraduate
days he led the Cadet threesome to
the intercollegiate championship.
Since then Colonel Wilson has
played with United States teams in
Pakistan and Argentina while on
tours of duty.

Though his rating has shrunk to
three goals, still more than any
other player the Cavaliers have
faced this year, Colonel Wilson still
has the stuff to play well. Just last
winter he and two companions won
the Indoor Twelve Goal
Tournament.

The United States Polo
Instructor's three goal rating was
the chief reason Middleburg spotted
the Cavaliers a 2-0 lead.

In the opening chukkar Cavalier
captain Ray Norden, rated at one
goal, quickly increased the margin
to three with a goal out of the first
line-up. The score turned out to be
the only goal of the period.

In the second seven and a half
minute chukkar Middleburg sliced
the deficit to one. With Col. Wilson
controlling the ball with dazzling
stickwork, Johnny Cussens, rated at
one goal, scored a goal. Just before
halftime Col. Wilson sliced the
deficit to one with a goal.

Midway through the third chukkar
John Cutler put the Cavalier
malletmen ahead by two on a near
side tail shot. Soon after Col.
Wilson made good on a penalty
shot from a cross situation to
narrow the lead to one.

Ray Norden tallied his second
goal to run the Virginia lead to 5-3
to round out the scoring in the
third chukkar.

Col. Wilson scored the game's
final point on a penalty shot from
another crossing situation.

Next Sunday the Malletmen
host Meadowbrook of New York at
2:30 at Brook Hill Farm. Zenas
Quelt leads the New Yorkers.
