Coach West's Sluggers Managed To Nip Ashland In Tenth Inning, 9-8, On Lou Paulson's Hit

Ashland Will Again Provide Competition This Afternoon At 1:30 As Cavaliers Seek Seventh Victory

Lou Paulson lined a single
between the shortstop and the third
base-man with the bases loaded to
drive in the winning run yesterday
in the bottom of the tenth inning.
The hit, Paulson's fourth of the
day, culminated a stirring
comeback by the Cavalier nine and
resulted in their seventh win in ten
tries.

Virginia had tied the score in the
bottom of the ninth. Paulson led
off the inning by punching a
grounder deep in the hole to the
shortstop. By the time the ball was
fielded the fourth-year Cavalier had
already crossed first base. With a
man on first the next batter struck
out. The following batter flied out
to left and then it was the hurler's
turn. Robbin Marvin came in to
pinch hit for the pitcher. The
first-year man tagged the ball to
deep center, right where the
center-fielder was waiting for it.
But, unbelievably, the fielder
dropped the ball and Paulson came
in to tie the score. The next batter
popped up to end the inning.

After Dick Witt retired the side
by facing four batters, one reached
base on an error, in the tenth the
Cavaliers came to bat
again. Co-captain Buzzy Schultz led
off with a stinging line drive
directly at the shortstop, who did
all he could to stop it. With Shultz
on first Steve Bryant grounded to
the shortstop, who flipped to
second to nab the runner. But,
again, the Ohioans blew it as the
second base-man drew his foot off
the base and both runners were
safe. Then Mike Cubbage bunted
safely, but was called out when it
was discovered his bat hit the ball
twice. Bubba White drew a base on
balls when Ashland balked
with the count 3-1 and the stage
was set for Paulson's game winning
hit.

Ashland had jumped to early
leads of 1-0 and 3-2 by taking
advantage of Cavalier miscues and
ineffective hurling. Stan Owens,
seeing his first moundwork in over
a week, walked eight men in his
short three inning stint, including
two runners when the bases were
loaded.

The big inning for the Cavaliers
came in the fourth when they
scored four runs. A home run by
Schultz, scored when the
right fielder fell down chasing his
long high drive, led the barrage. A
double by Bryant and singles by
Bruce Boger and Joel DeBoer spiced
the attack.

Virginia pulled within one run
of the Ohioans in the eighth. DeBoer
opened with a walk. Soon Bryant
slammed a double against the right
field fence, driving him home. The
opposing pitcher escaped further
damage by inducing the next two
hitters to ground out.

Ashland bunched five of their
nine hits into the sixth and seventh
innings to tally five runs and move
out in front by two, 8-6. Leading
the effort were Ron Miller with two
base hits and Nick Colonio with a
single and a double.

In pounding out 17 hits the
Cavaliers were led by Paulson, four
hits six and three runs, and Schultz,
three for five and two runs besides
his home run. Bryant was three for
six, including two doubles and
DeBoer was three for five with two
runs scored. Catcher Bob Seder led
Ashland with three doubles.

Witt picked up the win, his first
decision, but other Cavalier hurlers,
such as Brad Jordan, looked good
when they were pitching.

The game today has been moved
up to 1:30 so Coach Onesty's Track
team will not run out of daylight in
their meet with VMI.
