Cavalier Goalie Jim Eustace Prepares To Block Shot

Virginia Won First ACC Competition By Whipping UNC, 7-3

Virginia's stickmen started slow
but came on strong to down the
Tar Heels Friday afternoon, 7-3.
The win upped the Cavaliers' record
to 3-0.

Carolina opened the action in
the first quarter fast and furious. In
this first quarter UNC took 14
shots at the goal, but were able to
muster only 14 for the rest of the
game. Virginia's defensive effort led
by Al Kavasch, Doug Hilbert,
Chuck Hammer, and Pete Coy
tightened up on the Tar Heels
attack and held them scoreless in
the second half.

Cavalier middle, Sandy
Archibald, scored first in the game
on an assist from Charlie Rullman
with five minutes gone in the game.

Early UNC Scores

The face-off was won by UNC
and they controlled the ball in their
territory. Then, on an extra-man
situation, Carolina's star attack man,
Harper Peterson, scored on an assist
from Ray Sheipp.

Right after this Peterson struck
again with another assist from
Sheipp to put the Cavaliers down,
2-1.

First-Year Men Rally

Virginia fought to control the
ball. Down in Tar Heel territory
first-year man Jay Connor worked
his way in front of the goal and
flipped a pass to another first-year
man, middlefielder Bob Proutt, who flung
the ball in for a score, to tle the
game 2-2.

The second half was Virginia's.
Charlie Rullman: got his second
assist of the day and Jim Potter got
a point. Rullman then scored on a
pass from Connor as the Cavaliers
pulled further ahead, 4-2.

Sheipp and Peterson eased up
again and ended the scoring for
UNC on the same combination,
Sheipp to Peterson.

Another first-year man, Pete
Eldridge, proved that he could help
the team as he scooped up his own
missed shot and fired it in to put
Virginia out in front at the half,
5-3.

Defensive Second Half

In that second quarter, the
Cavalier defense had only allowed
UNC two shots.

The second half began well for
Virginia with Tad Joerdans winning
the face-off. With the Cavaliers
controlling the play Rullman passed
to Potter for Virginia's sixth point
of the day.

UNC's attack had dwindled to
become ineffective. Virginia's defense
was holding them well in
check and Sheipp and Peterson
were through for the day in the
scoring department.

The Cavaliers' last tally of the
game came in the fourth quarter
when Connor passed to Eldridge.
Eldridge's goal put the final score at
7-3.

Midfield Strength

Coach Beardmore's midfield
depth again made a big difference
in the game. Running three midfields,
the Cavaliers were able to
control the play most of the game
and managed to capture 80 ground
balls to 44 that UNC grabbed.

Virginia's attack was also more
proficient, outshooting the Tar
Heels 45-28. The face-off department
was much more even with the
Cavaliers winning eight and
Carolina winning seven.

Cavalier goalie Jim Eustace was
deprived of the chance to make
many saves by the team's defense,
but he did collect nine. UNC's
goalie, Pete Kramer, had a much
busier afternoon with 21 saves.

Next weekend sees the Cavaliers
traveling to Baltimore to face
Hopkins in what could be the
toughest collegiate game of the
season as well as the most important.
