Tennis Team Routs
Penn State Netters
Second-Year Man Jeff Podesta Laces Into Service In 6-2, 6-0 Win Over Penn State Opponent
Cavalier Netters Record Second 9-0 Triumph Warming Up For Florida Exhibition Tour Next Week
Tuesday morning tennis coach
Gordon Burris received a telephone
call from Penn State's tennis coach,
who was with his team in
Richmond, and the two decided to
have a match that afternoon. In an
inspiring match in Charlottesville
Penn State lost its first match and
the undefeated Cavaliers had their
second straight shutout, 9-0.
In the singles Mike Eikenberry
opened the match by defeating his
opponent 9-7 and 6-3. Then Jeff
Podesta won 6-2, 6-0 and Andy
Scheinman defeated his adversary
6-2 and 6-0. John Winter blanked
his opponent twice. Next Biff
Cooper defeated his opponent by
6-1 and 6-0. Doug Waterman
finished off the singles by shutting
out his opponent.
In the doubles Eikenberry and
Scheinman defeated their adversaries,
4-6, 6-3 and 6-2. Then Bob
Kain and John Mertz combined to
win by 6-4 and 6-2. The Podesta
-Winter duo won 6-1 and 6-2 to
finish off the scoring.
Coach Burris would not single
out any individual but was "very
pleased in the performance as a
whole". The match, following last
week's shutout of William and
Mary, served to warm the team up
for this coming week's trip to
Florida.
In Florida the team will play
eight exhibition matches with
Tennessee, Furman, Jacksonville
University, Florida, Calvin College,
Kalamazoo College and Florida
State over a period of eight days.
Then the Cavaliers return to
Virginia for their match of the
season against Williams College on
Monday, March 31.
On the season so far Coach
Burris considers the team "very
fortunate to have begun by winning
the first two matches". But he is
wary of the period between March
31 and April 19 when the Virginia
netters face "the hardest part" of
their schedule. At this time "if we
can play close to .500 until the
nineteenth we should finish above
.500 on the season."
