ATO, Phi Gam Stay On Top

By Gordy Rawles

Intramural roundballers unveiled
their many and varied talents once
more in the hallowed halls of
Memorial Gymnasium last
Thursday night.

Action in Intramural Division
A was highlighted by the unbeaten
Phi Gams' victory over TKE by a
lopsided 58-34 score. "Big" Bill
Buck tallied 20 points for the
winners while TKE's Harry Rench
turned in a 13 point performance.
PiKA had the high man for the
night in Bruce Broeker (22 points),
but the pre-season favorites were
upset by the hustling Betas. Windy
Bill and Marshall Deforrest led a
well-balanced attack with 14 and
13 points, respectively, to pull
themselves into a second place
divisional ranking. In other League
A games, Theta Delt beat Pi Kap,
50-42, to up their record to 4-2,
and Delta Sig, with Lawson Moyce
tallying 13 points, whomped Sigma
Pi by 55-29, in spite of Jim Cox's
20 point effort.

Division B teams were all active
on Thursday. Top-ranked SAE
relied on the scoring antics of
Chuck Edwards (17 points) and
Billy Corr (12 points) to retain
their unbeaten status as they fought
off the struggling St. A's. Bob Hine
and Henry Dudley scored 13 and
12 points, respectively, but could
not provide enough offense to
overcome the strong SAE's. Sigma
Phi on to its second ranking
behind SAE by defeating Chi Psi,
51-25, and KA, with a fine scoring
performance by "Little" Larry
Gates (17 points), romped over
Theta Chi by a 58-35 margin. In
another League B contest, the
DKE's suppressed AEPi, 43-30, as
Joe Ferens tallied 20 points for the
victors.

ATO and SPE, fighting for the
top spot in Division C, both
remained in the unbeaten ranks as
they defeated Chi Phi, 40-33, and
Kappa Sig, 48-38. Bill Austin
accounted for 16 points, but the
well-rounded SPE attack, led by
Phil Rogers and Dan Rowen, each
with 14 points, was too much for
the Kappa Sigs. DU (2-3) and St.
Elmo (0-5) faced off for the
Division C cellar spot, and the
DU's, spearheaded by Bob Poole's
18 points, came out on top by a
53-38 score. Barclay Macon and
Tom Krutzer each tallied 14 points
as Phi Delt bombed ZBT, 55-38.

Division D remained idle in
Thursday night's play, but all teams
will see action once again this week.

Elsewhere in IM action, Coach
Billy Williams' boxing workouts are
going into their last week;
eliminations in seven weight classes
will begin next Monday, and the
semi-finals and finals will
subsequently be presented in
Memorial Gym. Bag workouts and
sparring have already begun, and
those interested who have not yet
signed up should do so immediately
in order to have time to get in the
ten required workouts.

The semi-final round in the
squash tournament will take place
this week. Chip Young (Zete) will
meet Jim Lieberman (ZBT) in one
match; and in the other, Henry
Williams (Phi DelT) plays Dave
McDougal (Sig Pi).

The pool tournament has
entered the fourth round, and the
preliminaries for IM swimming will
be held Monday and Wednesday of
this week. In bowling, the regular
season is just ending, and the first
and second place teams in each
division will enter next week's
playoffs.
