Virginia's grapplers assured
themselves of a winning record
Tuesday night toppling Washington
& Lee 24-11. This leaves the Cavalier
record at 4-2 with one duel
match remaining against Virginia
Tech.
The victory, Virginia's second in
a row, plus a win over the Gobblers
needed impetus to carry the squad
to a respectable showing in the
ACC tournament Feb. 28-March 1
at the University of Maryland's
Cole Field House. The Terrapins, of
course, along with N.C.State are
highly favored.
Richard Birkel started things off
on the right foot for Coach George
Edwards in the 123 lb. class by
whupping up on Buzzy White 11-1.
John Pitas followed this with his
own act of aggression by pinning the
Generals' 130 pounder Ray Raspberry.

Cavalier Grapplers Overwhelmed W&L Generals Tuesday Night
John Pegues, not to be outdone
by anyone smaller than himself,
dittoed Pitas' feat by putting Wes
Pullman shoulders to the mat in
1:39 of his brief bout. Unfortunately,
Dixon Brown could repeat his
fine performance against VMI and,
consequently, lost to W&L's Bill
West.
At 152 lb. Tom Moore turned in
the third Cavalier pin of the evening
in 3:12 over Jay Thiemeyer. His
brother Ted Moore then proceeded
to scrunch Dave Higgins 11-1. At
177 It was victory at last for Jay
167 lb. Douglas. After a series of hard-luck
losses against more experienced
competition Douglas stuck Clark
Carter with a loss by a 7-2 count.
However, W&L picked up five
big points with a pin in the 177 lb.
class by Daniel Webster. In the
heavyweight division big Dick Opp
dropped a 4-0 decision to former
Richmond high school standout Jay
Clarke.
