Duke Whipped Virginia Last Night In Durham To Drop Cavaliers To Sixth Place In Conference
The Duke Blue Devils avenged an
earlier season loss to Virginia last
night with a convincing 100-81
victory in Duke Indoor Stadium.
The Blue Devils lead at halftime
49-41, but had to survive an early
half rush by the Cavilers that tied
the score at 49 all on a Norm
Carmichael basket. The Dukemen
still had some life in them as they
went on to score eleven straight
points to put the game out of reach
as early as 15:32 left in the contest.
Leading the Blue Devils in
scoring was their hot shooting
forward Rick Catherman with 23
points and 6′11.. center Randy
Denton with 20 counters.
First Half
The second half opened with
baskets by John Gidding, Tony
Kinn and Carmichael that tied the
game at 49 with 18:08 in the game.
However, five points by little Dick
DeVenzio,four by Fred Lind and
two by Denton sent the Blue Devils
home free. Mike Wilkes ended the
draught on a follow up basket to
shave the lead to nine,60-51. Lind
came right back with five
consecutive free throws to increase
the lead to twelve, 65-53.
Stretched Advantage
Duke continued to stretch their
advantage on the play of Denton
and DeVenzio to a fifteen point
bulge, 82-67. Steve Vandenberg
then went to work and soon Duke
held a twenty-three point lead
98-75 before baskets by Kinn, John
English, and Bill Gerry moved
Virginia to over eighty before
Warren Chapman hit the century
mark and closed out the scoring in
the game.
Duke was in complete control
for the entire first half. Kevin
Kennelly opened the scoring for the
Cavilers but DeVenzio came right
back to knot the score at two all.
Kennelly again tickled tenets for
a 4-2 Virginia lead but five
consecutive points by Dave
Golden, DeVenzio and Denton put
Duke in the lead 7-4. Gidding
scored four points to regain the lead
for the Cavaliers. Katherman tied
the game for Duke at 10-10 with a
foul shot and Case and Gidding
exchanged baskets with Lind and
Denton before Katherman put
Duke ahead for good, 15-14, with
a free throw. Duke then reeled off
seven straight points for a 21-14
lead before Virginia finally called
time out with eleven
minutes to go in the first half.
The time out did not benefit
the Cavaliers as Denton ran wild
and upped the Duke lead to 27-18.
Kinn Hits
Tony Kinn hit his first shot
from thirty feet out and Gerry
followed up a missed shot to cut
the margin to five at 27-22. Man on
the spot Katherman and
Vandenberg came right back with
field goals to give Duke a nine point
spread. Kinn and Katherman traded
goals but steals by DeVenzio and
Evan and another basket by
DeVenzio gave Duke their biggest
lead of the half, 43-29 with only
4:32 left in the half. Baskets by
Gidding and Case and a buzzer shot
by Carmichael sent Virginia in the
locker room trailing by eight, 49-41.
