Seek Tenth Triumph

After Saturday Loss To N.C. State, Gibson's Crew Aims To End Two Game Losing Skein

Fighting to keep their heads
above the ominous .500 mark, the
Cavaliers journey to Blacksburg
tonight hopeful of revenging an
earlier loss at the hands of the
Giant Gobbler. Back in December
Tech whipped the Cavaliers 85-74
in the Big Five Tournament.
Virginia had swept to the finals of
the competition only to have the
Gobblers take the state title; Coach
Gibson and his squad will
undoubtedly have this lingering
thought as impetus for revenge.

Howie Shannon's troupe of
Hokies go into this evening's
contest with an admirable 12-8
record. More importantly, however,
is the fact that Tech has lost only
one game in Blacksburg thus far
this season, winning six on their
home floor.

Ellis Leads Hokies' Attack

Chris Ellis, a hot shooting guard
has been most effective for the
Gobblers. A definite pro prospect,
this 6-4 playmaker has a .450 mark
from the floor and has been
averaging close to 19 points a game.

Teamed with Ellis in the
backcourt is Lloyd King. King is
just a sophomore, but he has been
playing a consistent game for the
Hokies all season, averaging 11.6
points a contest.

Big Dan Wetzel stands 6-9 and
mans the center position. Wetzel
has been averaging in the double
figures as well at a 13.2 clip and is
the team's top rebounder grabbing
169 for a 8.9 average. Virginia Tech
likes to employ a man for man
defense, and Norm Carmichael may
well be faced opposite Wetzel for
forty minutes.

Tech Relies On Forwards

Tech has two strong forwards in
6-3 Stan Kerrick and 6-5 R.N.
Wagner. Both men average over ten
points a game, and much of the
Hokies' offensive potency comes
from underneath the boards.
Wagner has pulled off an average of
7.3 rebounds, and Kerrick has been
on the boards for 6.6 rebounds a
game. Two Junior reserves, W.R.
Deskins and Dale Manuel are also
expected to see a lot of action.

Norm Carmichael, still way up
in the ACC standings in the field
goal accuracy department with a
59.4 percent figure, is narrowing in
on a Cavalier career mark in
rebounding. The big Virginia center
has garnered 588 rebounds thus far
in his three year tenure on the
Varsity, and is only 24 away
from a record set by Gene Engel.
Engel collected a grand total of 612
rebounds during the 1961-63
seasons.

Only One Loss At Home.

The Virginia Tech Gobblers do
not lose many on their home court.
The only Tech loss in Blacksburg
was to a scrappy Villanova five,
70-57. In his last outing, Howie
Shannon took the Gobblers to
Winston-Salem but lost to Wake
Forest 79-71. The Techmen happen
upon more ACC competition in the
Cavaliers and would like to bust
into the win column.

The Cavaliers presently hold a
9-9 overall record. Although not
facing a crucial game in so far as the
Conference standings go, they need
a win in Blacksburg tonight to stay
above the .500 level.
